Version of the Bible

Posted by Mike on 08.12.2008

What version of the Bible do you prefer to use?  Me personally I prefer to use NKJV and the NASB.

The NIV is translated by phrase, which makes it less accurate.  The NASB, however, is translated by word, which makes it the most accurate English translation currently on the market.  (Both of these versions are translated from the Greek text.)

ESV is said to be the most accurate, and it is easy(ish) to read. I am really liking it, except for the fact that I used to use NIV until Christmas (when I got my new Bible) and now memorizing verses at camp and stuff is harder because I had to try to memorize them in a new version. My own Bible I REALLY like! It is a adult study Bible and the only thing about it is that it is too big to fit in a Bible case. My friend’s dad has the same Bible. (The same friend that Josh found out all this stuff about her by googling her, and that totally creep-ed her out.) ttyl

The English Standard Version translates word-for-word like the New American Standard, but it translates for clarity, which takes away from the literal context. The NASB, however, does not translate for clarity, which makes it harder to memorize from.

I used the NIV for years and committed verses to memory in that version. Then, my Dad decided it was not quite as accurate as he would prefer, so we started using the NKJV. My quotation is occasionally a mixture of the two versions. lol

A version to avoid is the TNIV (Today’s New International Version). The translators took out gender references to make the version more acceptable to women. They are catering to feminists.

Really? I did not know that. Well, that is a problem in our day and age.

I want to make something clear, Oblivia, I am not saying that it is not a bad Bible, it is just not as accurate as the NASB.

I prefer the KJV, but maybe that’s jsut because that’s what I’ve grown up with. It’s also a beautiful version. (Don’t fight me, because I don’t know how to debate this topic AT ALL! :) )
To Erik B., I HATE people who do that to the Bible. If feminists want their own gender free religion, they should go create their own, not twist a wonderfully sweet one to be a gross mess.
We do Bible quizzing in the NIV, but it is a VERY weak translation.
